What is Biochar?
Explaining what biochar truly is can be challenging, as its expansive and multidimensional nature encompasses a vast universe of possibilities —hence our name, Biochar Universe. Biochar is created by transforming organic matter using specialized technology. This process halts the natural decomposition of organic material, converting it into a stable, partially mineralized form composed almost entirely of pure carbon—making it a relative of diamond, which is made of pure carbon. Biochar features a range of structures, from nano to macro porosities, resulting in an enormous functional surface area that acts as a carrier, adsorbent, decontaminant, molecular balancer, insulator, and more. This is why biochar is often referred to as 'nature's nanotechnology,' supporting chemical reactions and stabilizing systems.

Ancient Amazonian Origins
The ancestral practices of Amazonian peoples gave rise to Terra Preta do Indio (Portuguese for “Amazonian Dark Earth”), one of the most fertile soils on Earth, created by incorporating large percentages of biochar into the soil.

Rediscovery of Terra Preta
Modern technology has rediscovered the latent treasure of Amazonian Dark Earth, unveiling its potential for sustainable development. Soil analysis studies (Glaser 2006) suggest that these fertile soils were created through composting in clay vessels, combining soil with nutrient-rich waste such as animal and plant residues, bones, manure, ash and biochar.
Biochar's roots trace back to the Dark Earth of the Amazon, or Terra Preta do Indio, one of the most fertile soils on the planet. If we combine all the Terra Preta patches from the civilization that once thrived along the Amazon, they would cover an area equivalent to the size of France.

According to the CDR.fyi 2024 Q2 Durable CDR Market Update report 88,017 tonnes of durable CDR were delivered, a historic high for a quarter. Biochar Carbon Removal (BCR) dominated these deliveries, accounting for 99% of the total. BCR’s relatively low price and short delivery cycle have made it the preferred durable CDR method for those seeking short-term delivery and retirement of carbon credits, or an economical option for experimenting with durable CDR.
